Mountain Weekend 2003

September 6th - 7th
(Sat-Sun)

Selamatt

Don't miss it!

This is a hiking event for people who want to spend a weekend in the Alps and stay in a simple mountain hut.

Programme

Saturday, Sep 6th
Meeting: 08:00, Meeting Point of the Zurich Main Station. We will take a train/bus to Starkenbach. A small cablecar will take us up to 1580m of altitude. We will hike up Mount Selun (2204m). This takes about 2 hours and offers a terrific view, especially to lake Walensee right below (and especially if the weather is nice).
After a rest, we will hike the same way back down and visit a cave. After one hour's walk we reach our accommodation, the Selamatt mountain hut. We will cook our own dinner and sleep in small dorms (woollen sheets provided) - but of course only after a lot of playing games, chatting, singing... and maybe even a short stargazing walk.
Sunday, Sep 7th
On Sunday, there is enough time for another walk/hike depending on the weather conditions (approx. 2-4 hours). We will be back at Zurich HB around 18:00.

Please note:

This event takes place in the mountains. You should be reasonably fit to undertake the hike as described, and you should definitely bring good equipment (hiking shoes - no jogging shoes - and a good raincoat). The hike is neither difficult nor dangerous, but people should stick to our instructions. The accommodation provides no luxury but everything necessary, plus a lot of atmosphere. There is electric light and even a shower with cold water! We will cook on a wooden stove. Some soft drinks and beer can be bought at the hut.

What to bring:

  • ticket to Starkenbach (via Wattwil-Nesslau), costs: 15-30 CHF (from Zurich) - see table below. Bring some money for the ticket back from the trip (don't buy a return ticket on Saturday, it won't be valid on Sunday!) or use your Gleis 7 ticket.
  • Hiking boothiking boots
  • rain coat (maybe also rain trousers)
  • lunch and snacks for two days + drinks for one day
  • hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • important: some space in your backpack to carry a share of the dinner and breakfast

plus maybe a torch, games, camera...
There is no need to bring a sleeping bag.

Costs

Apart from the train ticket please bring Fr. 25.- with you for expenses during the weekend (apart from the train ticket). The estimated costs for the train tickets (from Zurich) are in the table below. No guarantees on accurate prices...
