Industrial Sights - KKW Leibstadt
In the past, trainees have said that they wished that they had more
industry exposure during their time in Switzerland. To respond to
this need, IAESTE created "Industrial Sights": Industrial Sights is
designed to take trainees
to different companies and introduce them to different technologies.
The trips are designed to last between 2 and 4 hours and will cover
the basic areas of that particular company.
Don't be scared, this is not school!
Now you might be wondering why you should go. Because it will be
fun and the bonus is that you might actually learn something.
Nuclear Powerplant Leibstadt, Leibstadt, Switzerland - 2nd tour 2003
About KKW Leibstadt
KKW Leibstadt was built in 1984
as the fifth and biggest nuclear powerplant ("Kernkraftwerk") of Switzerland.
Today it produces 1170 MW and is one of the biggest nuclear powerplants of Europe.
60% of the electricity in Switzerland is produced by hydroplants, 40% by nuclear
powerplants.
Programme
An industrial visit has been organised for Tuesday November 11th to visit the Nuclear
Powerplant Leibstadt. The visit will start at 14:00 and last until ca 17:00. It should
be interesting for sure! Due to the superior technical expertise of IAESTE trainees
special permission has been asked that we visit zones in the powerplant which are not normally
open to visitors.
We will first visit the information centre and then the powerplant. We hope to be able
to visit the coolig tower, turbine building, control room, fuel storage ponds and the
top of the reactor head although nothing is guaranteed. Plus you may have the thrill
of wearing white shoes, yellow socks and bright blue or orange t-shirts inside the
controlled areas!
The guided tour will last most of the afternoon, depending on level
of interest and the availability of access to certain areas.
Afterwards (if there is time and people want to use Gleis 7) it
is suggested that a trip is made accross the border into Germany, to
the small but attractive town of Waldshut.
