Ticino Weekend 2006
August 26 - 27

Discovering the South side of the Alps!

Did you know that the region of Switzerland at the South side of the Alps is Italian-speaking?

Did you know that the bungee jumping scene in the 007 Goldeneye movie was filmed in Switzerland, not in Russia? And that you can imitate James Bond with a 220 meters high bungee jump?

Are you up for some biking and hiking along the valleys of the sunniest canton in Switzerland?

IAESTE LC Zurich invites you to experience all of this!

Looking forward to spending a great weekend with you!

Andrea and Davide

Program

A map of Ticino can be found here.

Saturday, August 26
View San Salvatore Monte San Salvatore
  • Meeting at 07:40 under the big clock in Zurich main station's main hall
  • Train ride to Airolo across the Alps
  • Not-that-hard bike ride to Biasca, 40 km distance, 850 meters height difference (downhill!), 2-3 hours
  • Transfer to Lugano and check in at Montarina Hostel (featuring a nice swimming pool!)
  • Taking the funicular to the top of Monte San Salvatore, enjoying the view
  • Walk along the lake, back to Lugano
  • Dinner at an Italian-style pizzeria
  • Discovering Lugano by evening and partying

Sunday, August 27
Verzasca Dam Bungee
  • Transfer to the Verzasca Dam in Vogorno, by train until Tenero and then hiking (no longer than 1.5 hours) in the Verzasca valley
  • Option of imitating James Bond's 220 meters high bungee jump!
  • Transfer to Lavertezzo by postal bus, swimming in the Verzasca river's fresh green water
  • Back to Bellinzona, end of the event, heading back home (sniff :-/ )

Participation fees

In order to profit of a very advantageous special offer on the bike ride, we will buy the train ticket from Zurich or Basel and back for you. Because of the nature of this offer, Gleis 7 cannot be used. Dropping the offer and using Gleis 7 on Sunday evening on the way back from Ticino would be more expensive.

Upon registration, please specify whether you need a ticket from Zurich or from Basel. If you live on the way to Ticino, tell us from which railway station you will leave in the Remarks field of the registration form.

  • From Zurich and back, with SBB General Abonnement (GA): 80 CHF
  • From Zurich and back, with SBB half-fare (1/2) and Gleis 7: 120 CHF
  • From Zurich and back, with SBB half-fare (1/2) but no Gleis 7: 120 CHF
  • From Zurich and back, without SBB half-fare (1/2): 175 CHF
  • From Basel and back, with SBB General Abonnement (GA): 80 CHF
  • From Basel and back, with SBB half-fare (1/2) and Gleis 7: 135 CHF
  • From Basel and back, with SBB half-fare (1/2) but no Gleis 7: 135 CHF
  • From Basel and back, without SBB half-fare (1/2): 200 CHF

If you do not yet have a SBB half-fare card, we recommend you buying one! Check the SBB website!

A surcharge of 25 CHF will apply for participants who are not affiliated with IAESTE or its partner organisations.

The money will be collected at the start of the weekend. Only cash is accepted! :-)

Included in the participation fee

  • Train from Zurich or Basel to Ticino and back
  • Train and bus rides during the weekend
  • Funicular to Monte San Salvatore and back
  • Bike rental
  • Dinner
  • Accommodation and breakfast
  • Lunch on Sunday

Not included in the price

  • Transfer from your place to Zurich or Basel and back
  • Lunch on Saturday
  • Usage of luggage locker in Tenero on Sunday
  • Bungee jumping: 195 CHF per person, to be paid cash directly at the Verzasca dam. The price sinks to 175 CHF per person if more than 10 people will go for it! So, convince your friends! :-)

Important - what to bring

  • Lunch for Saturday
  • Hiking/sports shoes
  • Swimming suit, towel
  • Sunglasses and sun cream
  • Cash for the bungee jumping (and everything else)

  • Lots of energy and your best smile!
We will have to pack light and carry our luggage while cycling (fortunately it is downhill!). The bikes have a rack for carrying luggage. If you have some appropriate ropes or luggage belts to fasten your luggage onto it, bring them with you.

Meeting point and transportation

IAESTE Switzerland is not responsible for any damage or accident! Make sure that you are well insured (medical, accidental & liability insurance!).

For bungee jumping, make sure you read the rules, procedures and requirements on www.trekking.ch.

During the first two days after registration opens, IAESTE trainees and members will be given priority. After that, registration is open to everybody on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Number of participants and registration

Please register for this event between 2006-08-16 13:00 and 2006-08-21 13:00 (registration exclusively electronically and in the given time frame, valid e-mail address required; link for registration published here during this time).

The first ones to do so who fit in our group of up to 35 people (including helpers) are in! If the list of participants is already filled up, you can still register. You are then added to the waiting list, and with a bit of luck you can still join!
