Friday, March 30, 2007

Do you want to know more about our solar system, life and death of stars, galaxies…?

IAESTE Basel invites you to an observation evening at the Astronomical Institute of the University of Basel. The Astronomical Institute was founded in 1894 and its research focuses mainly on galaxy evolution and near-field cosmology. The Institute also participates in the NASA mission SIM and the ESA mission GAIA. Furthermore, in studies of galaxy evolution and cosmology researchers at the Institute are avid users of NASA's and ESA's Hubble Space Telescope.

How to find the Astronomical Institute

Astronomisches Institut
Venusstrasse 7
CH - 4102 Binningen
From Bahnhof SBB (central railway station):

On foot: Exit the railway station viaduct in the direction Gundeldingen (Media Markt). Walk along the Gempenstrasse opposite the exit till you come to Gundeldingerstrasse. Now turn right and continue till you hit a big cross-way. After a small climb on the hill to your left (Friedhofstrasse, note that this street has a strong incline), and you will pass under a little bridge. Keep straight on, and then take the first street on the left. This is Venusstrasse. The Astronomical Institute is about 150 m further leftwards down this road.

By tram: Exit the station towards Centralbahnplatz (main exit). Take tram line 2 in the direction Binningen and get off at the third stop Margarethen. On the other side of the tram stop, take Friedhofsstrasse (note that this street has a strong incline) to walk up the hill, and you will pass under a little bridge. Keep straight on, and then take the first street on the left. This is Venusstrasse. The Astronomical Institute is about 150 m further leftwards down this road.
