IAESTE Industrial Sight
Hocoma AG - Leader in Robotic Rehabilitation Therapy
Friday, January 25, 2008, 1:30pm-5pm
About "Industrial Sights"
In the past, trainees have said that they wished that they had more industry exposure during
their time in Switzerland. To respond to this need, IAESTE created "Industrial Sights", for the
first time in the summer of 2001. Industrial Sights is designed to take trainees to different
companies and introduce them to different technologies. The trips are designed to last between
2 and 4 hours and will cover the basic areas of that particular company.
Don't be scared, this is not school!
Hocoma AG
Are you interested in biomedical engineering, robotics, and how engineers and
scientists can improve the lives of people living with disabilities? Do you want to
try learning hands-on about some of the world's most advanced robotic technologies
for physical rehabilitation? Hocoma is the leader in robotic rehabilitation therapy
for neurological movement disorders. Hocoma develops innovative therapy solutions
working closely with leading clinics and research centers.
Hocoma's products include:
1. The Lokomat System,
the first driven gait orthosis, is used for robotic treadmill
training of neurological patients with movement disorders caused by stroke, spinal cord
injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease. The Lokomat
has been available on the market since 2001 and has been a crucial improvement in the
art and science of locomotion therapy. Today, more than 100 Lokomat Systems are installed
in prestigious clinics worldwide. The
Pediatric Lokomat
provides intensive locomotion therapy now also for the treatment of small children with cerebral palsy or other
neurological disorders. Since the market introduction in autumn 2005, several Pediatric
Lokomat Systems have been installed worldwide.
2. The Erigo, a pioneering tilt table with an integrated robotic stepping system.
It supports and facilitates the mobilization of neurological patients in the early phase
of rehabilitation or for long bed rest patients.
3. The Andago, a new user-friendly system for manually assisted treadmill training.
Optimized ergonomics and patient handling are combined with a novel body weight support
system and unique upgrade possibilities to automate the gait training. The dynamic body
weight support system allows - compared to conventional body weight support systems - a precise
unloading which leads to a more physiological vertical movement of the patient and promotes
a more physiological gait.
4. A novel upper extremity therapy device named Armeo in close cooperation with
leading researchers and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (USA).
Today, Hocoma has around 50 employees who work in the headquarters near Zurich and for the subsidiary in the USA.
Program
IAESTE LC Zurich offers you an interesting afternoon at Hocoma AG on Friday, January 25, 2008, 13:30-17:00.
We are going to hear some more details about the company, its products, and its technologies from Hocoma's CEO.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions about Hocoma and its products. You will learn about the rapidly
growing area of rehabilitation robotics and biomedical engineering.
Then, you will have a chance to take a hands-on tour of Hocoma and have a chance to see and interact with
all of its amazing products!
Location and Time
Meeting point is at the station "Schwerzenbach ZH" at 13:00. We will then walk to Hocoma AG's
Swiss headquarters. If you are not sure how to get to Schwerzenbach ZH, come to the meeting point
at Zurich HB at 12:35.
Cost
There is no cost except the return ticket to Schwerzenbach ZH.
Registration
The maximum number of participants allowed for this event is
30 (including organizers and helpers) and
the registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. If your
registration is not among the first 30, you will be put on
